A stunning narrative exploring loss, revival, and changing direction even when you may not want to. The Sea In Winter is Maisie’s beautifully written journey from hope through heartbreak and back again, but it’s the setting and the background that sets it apart. Learning about the Native cultures of the northwest coast was fascinating subtext, and the author’s note even more revealing. At the same time, Maisie’s struggles with middle school friendships, guilt, anger makes her incredibly relatable, as does her battle with anxiety and depression. Throughout it all, the love and support of her family, who Maisie learns to lean on when she needs to the most, is something all readers might inspire to.
