The Vital Abyss by James S.A. Corey
5.0
Really loved this one. Cortazar doesn't get much screentime in the books despite being a very important character, and he gets short shrift in the main novels' moralizing too. This story made me feel very sorry for him.
While the story exists mostly to fill in some of the holes in Cortazar's backstory and how he wound up on Laconia, we also get a brief, tantalizing glimpses of the protomolecule and how it works.
A condensed version of everything The Expanse does well: interesting characters, practical and clever worldbuilding, human stories.
