Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

4.0

I didn't exactly know what to expect going in to Rebecca, and honestly, I don't think there's a good way to sum it up. It's described as Gothic romance, thriller, I've even seen horror–though I think horror is a stretch. It's an overall terrific read full of interesting choices and anticipation. It truly does feel like a ghost story. Du Maurier is hugely influential, and it's obvious why.

It's an intriguing story with little plot, which works great. I would argue it's a little long for the writing style, which is a style I usually love, but I don't know that it works in this sense. At times, it serves the story well, amping up anticipation by drawing out everything, but I started to feel like it dragged part way through, and the ending lost me even though it was quite the turn of events. It felt like things were resolved, then they weren't, they they were, then they weren't, then...etc. That being said, it is still beautifully written with interesting characters. Some might even find that the drawn out events makes things more exciting!

Du Maurier's imagery is amazing, she can tell you what's happening without outright saying it, and she has a way of capturing conversations in a way that feels very real. It's just that little bit of drag that made me dock one star, but I think it's a classic and certainly deserves its accolades. I may pick it up again, even.
