The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

4.0

I'd forgotten how sad this book is. Also this has got to have one of the best opening paragraphs in all of literature, and I will never not be amazed at how the sense of it has completely changed by the time it is repeated as the closing lines of the book. Amazing stuff even if it is mostly overshadowed by the brilliance of We Have Always Lived in the Castle which was published three years later.
