Divergent by Veronica Roth

Wow. This book was spectacular. I started and finished it within the space of a few hours because I simply could not put it down.

At first I was a little weary, because when i first started the book, I read the first page and immediately thought "Hunger Games". The writing style appeared to be the same, even the overall idea did as well. But as the book developed, both the story and the style of writing evolved into something so unique and exciting that i just became immersed into this brilliant ORIGINAL story.

I loved the character of Tris, and I loved she eventually gained an identity and learned to be a strong, independent person during her Dauntless training.

i also fell in love with Four/Tobias. He was a deep, multi-layered character that i loved getting to slowly discover as the book went on, as well as his transition from intimidating instructor to the extremely hot and amazing Tobias. I also liked that the author didn't single him out into the role of "romantic interest" from the get-go. So many books introduce the characters and it's basically clear who the protagonist is going to end up with based on the first couple pages. But this relationship was more complicated. Roth kept me in the dark for a few chapters, making me question whether Four was really going to end up as the romantic interest or not. For a brief time i even thought Will and Tris might end up together, but i loved the slow, realistic build up of romantic feelings during the course of the novel. I think part of the reason the nature of the relationship was left slightly ambiguous for so long was Tris's Abnegation up-bringing, which kind of made feelings of intimacy seem almost foreign to her, and for that i have to blame Roth's amazing writing.

The overall storyline, while a little less original, was still chocked with enough twists and turns to keep me at the edge of my seat, and gave enough suspense to make me wonder if the characters would all make it out. There are some novels where it's apparent that the characters will make it out of danger unscathed, but I certainly did not get this feeling this tie, and was concerned about the safety of everybody! (especially at the end sighh)It may just be my inability to see things coming but i TOTALLY did not see two of the major twists in the boo, especially Caleb choosing Erudite, and Four being Tobias. The three deaths at the end shocked me as well (especially Will's GAH!)

overall, this was a great and very exciting book that left me wanting more, and I can't wait to read the next one!
