The Gentle Boy by Nathaniel Hawthorne
challenging
slow-paced
1.0
We are very removed from the time of the Puritans and Quakers at war with each other. It’s impossible to really understand why, and Hawthorne’s goal here, in not describing exactly what heresies the Quakers believed, is to have you see the futility of the religious war. I didn’t quite follow why the child had such power over the adults, and the arch style makes it difficult to fully comprehend what Hawthorne intended.
