A Spindle Splintered by Alix E. Harrow
3.0
“I never stopped trying to save you, so don’t you fucking dare stop trying to save yourself.”
3.5/5 stars.
Alix’s writing is, as usual, beautiful and whimsical in this book. I liked the twist on a classic story. But my god, there’s WAY too many pop culture references in this book. Every single time Zinnia mentioned something in our current time, it took me out of the story. I also just don’t think they were necessary? I think they were there to show that Zinnia is clearly from a different place and doesn’t belong, but there are other ways of doing that. And the references to Internet memes/phrases just didn’t contribute anything to the story for me. I was debating rating this book 4 or 3.5 stars and ultimately chose 3.5 mostly because of this.
Otherwise, it was a good, quick story. I didn’t get really feel comfortable in this book’s world until a few chapters in, which was fine. There’s not a whole lot of time to really feel for all these characters, although a couple of the scenes did hit me emotionally. But since it’s so short, you can’t really dwell on any one scene for too long, so it’s quite fast-paced. I like fast-paced though, so it worked out for me.
