The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent
5.0
Oraya is the adopted human daughter of the Nightborn vampire King and her only chance to become something more than prey is to enter the Kejari, a tournament held by the goddess of death. To survive this tournament, Oraya is forced to make an alliance with a mysterious rival. Raihn is a ruthless vampire, an efficient killer, and a rival to Oraya's father's crown. He's also her greatest competition, yet Oraya feels oddly drawn to him.
What's not to love here!? THE SERPENT AND THE WINGS OF NIGHT checks off all the necessary boxes. The world building is excellent, the magic is both well described and developed, and the plot is filled with action, tension, and a sprinkle of romance. I loved the concept of the Kejari tournament and all that it entails. It's absolutely wild but so well executed.
As for the characters, I loved Oraya - she's a badass human and makes for a strong female main character. I also really liked Raihn as our male lead - he's certainly dangerous with an air of mystery but so very likeable. The romance here is a slow burn with some mildly open door spice. I really loved the ending and am so excited to read book 2!
