The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow

3.0

This book was very rough for me.

Alix definitely has a way with words; I don't think anyone could deny that fact. I really enjoyed her previous book, The Ten Thousand Doors of January, for the writing style, but in this book...it was all a bit too much. The beginning was strong, but the middle dragged a LOT for me. I think this book actually put me in a reading slump. I started reading other books that had more action and avoided finishing this one simply because I wasn't feeling it. Eventually, I sat down and told myself to just read it, and it did pick up towards the end. In fact, the last 100 or so pages of this book are the reason why I'm giving it 3 stars and not just 2. I was close to DNFing this book around the 52% mark but I'm glad that the ending partially redeemed the story for me. I'm also sort of glad I've finished reading it, so now I can continue reading other books that might be a bit more fast-paced and to my liking. Not to say that this one was bad necessarily, just not quite the type of story I typically read.

I did like the characters, although they were a bit restricted to their roles as mother, maiden, and crone. I really liked August as a side character.
