The House of Hades by Rick Riordan

5.0

THAT’S THE GOOD STUFF

I'm rereading this series and remembered that this book was one of my favorites and now I know why. In this series, Percy and Annabeth are finally established as a couple, and beginning in The Mark of Athena, we get to see their interactions together (something that 15 year old me loved). And this particular book gave us so many good quotes and scenes with both of them, oh my god.

I liked the cameos from older monsters/creatures that we haven't seen in ages. And, God, I love Bob's plot line. Their time in Tartarus has to be described as philosophical - and I loved it. Having Bob help them only to discuss the morals of wiping his memory and essentially using him, having to rely on each other for support and comfort, having to make decisions that go against their nature...it paints a more mature version of these characters that hasn't really been seen since the original series. Not to say that the stakes aren't high in Heroes of Olympus, but I think that anyone who reads both series can definitely sense a shift in the writing style. The original Percy Jackson series was, in my opinion, more dark and mature, and Rick kind of lost that tone in The Lost Hero, maybe because he was writing POVs for characters that he didn't have as long a history with.

I'd be a liar if I said that I didn't tear up at the end. Something about it just always gets to me.

To be honest, I'm not really looking forward to rereading The Blood of Olympus, because even at 15, I had problems with it. I'm 22 now and a more critical reader, so prepare for a somewhat scathing review when I get to it. But I really do love this series, this world, and these characters. I don't think I could ever let it go.
