Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman by Robert K. Massie

3.0

Very readable biography. I didn't know much about Catherine before reading but in early chapters especially she would clearly make a good heroine in a YA novel. You can't help but cheer her on her rise to power when she's stuck with a nightmare of a mother and the worst boy in the world as her husband. The author knows just the right details to focus on for that reading too--like the carriage that Catherine gets into when she crosses the Russian border, a cozy, pillow-filled house on a sled.
