The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

5.0

5/5!!!!!!!!!!
I read this book late 2018 but I feel like I have to write a review on it so I can actually sleep at night.
So, I watched the movie with some friends before I read the book [I know, crucify me] and afterward I loved it so much!
From a critical perspective, this book had so much to give. Not just the message behind the story, but the characters were everything to me. [Not Chris. You know what you did.] From the moment I started reading about DeVante I cursed George Tillman's name for not giving him more screentime in the movie. I mean, I know I have a book type. The sort-of douche bag character who is actually a cutie and super funny. But anyways, everything about his character and story just intrigued me. Not to mention the fact that Khalil was the most lovable character when he was only alive for like three chapters! [That's not a spoiler, it's on the back of the book]
Everything about Angie Thomas' character writing was so nice and really meshed well with the story. [Except Chris. I'll keep saying this] The way she used descriptive imagery to separate the two worlds Star has to juggle was beautiful. I swear I cried multiple times watching the movie and the book was nothing different. God, everything about this was just too good. It deserves every gold star ever. [Pun intended.]
