An extremely fast-paced and very short story! I was surprised this was the first in the series when there was so little set-up, but it does what it purports to, and fairly well at that! Readers who want fast-paced action without too much violence or too much complexity in sentences and vocabulary would enjoy this. I can imagine the next books in the series will be just as formulaic and simple in plot.
I was disappointed that the main character, Tom, doesn't have too many setbacks on his first quest. Things felt surprisingly easy! And you have the classic case of a female sidekick who feels like she's there just to help the boy hero. It's of its time, but I can see why this series was so popular when it's so pacy and when the main character is without any traits that would deem him unlikeable.
