The Boneless Mercies by April Genevieve Tucholke
5.0
•”Four Boneless Mercies stood at a crossroads near a hangman’s tree. In their hand they held four weapons, freshly ripped from the grave”•
Frey, Ovie, Runa and Juniper are Boneless Mercies. They kill the old and sickly for coin. It’s a woman’s job - for men cannot handle the sad work. But the girls are not content with the death trade. They want glory and freedom. So they decide to try to slay a monstrous beast that is terrorizing a distant part of the land.
I loved the blending of mythologies that the author used. I picked up on mainly Norse/Viking mythology but there were notes of other mythologies as well. The story is unique while still bearing a similarity to a typical “hero’s journey” tale. The characters are well formed and unique - even the more background characters each have a unique voice and personality, heck, even the monster - Logafell - has a unique personality.
This book isn’t about romance and love triangles - it’s about the desire to be remembered, a thirst for honor and above all, it is about friendship and sisterhood.
This is a really good, empowering read.
4,75 out of 5 stars.
