A book adapted for a middle grade/teen audience, but one which presents a wealth of information in an easy-to-read and engaging format. As an adult I felt it rather skimmed the surface, but it makes a great jumping-off point for anyone wishing to start their reading in this field.
Spanning years of history, we are granted insight into the notion of race and how it’s been dealt with over time. Educational and illuminating. There were some people/areas that I’m embarrassed to know little about…but that showed the significance of this book and the need to educate people about race and how attitudes towards race shape so much of what happens.
It might be a mark of when this was published, but I feel this could be revised to reflect recent events. It’s shameful that this book has been banned in so many American states and it concerns me greatly that it seems to needed now more than ever.
