Ooooooo Hafsah knows how to write sexual tension doesn’t she!

For the first two section of this novel I truly didn’t understand the hype around this book. The action was limited and the constant wandering through Sharr edged in boring.  I love a mixed viewpoint but the constant flitting between Nasir and Zafira’s POVs was too frequent, the endless number of short chapters (a 400 page book should not have over 80 chapters) breaking up any attempt to build up the tension. Sometimes we don’t always need to know how both characters are feeling. We can infer it.

Needless to say that last night I was utterly unbothered by this novel.

And would be shocked to discover I just finished part 3 in one sitting this morning.

Because omg it all came together beautifully. And there was proper ACTION. But let’s be honest here, the real star that saw me through was the TENSION in Chapter 74 because it was too much. Quite literally TOO HOT TO HANDLE and I don’t even apologise for sounding like a 14 year old right now because *starts fanning self . Honestly people talk about the knife to throat trope but I want more nursing please. CRIKEY Hafsah knew what she was doing didn’t she!

And I mean you know from that moment I was well and truly invested
even if it was just to make sure he finally kissed the girl and not to make sure they escaped Sharr. I’m not even ashamed at this point 😂
.

Doesn’t mean I still have issues though. Kifah was well and truly sidelined to the point of obscurity as were the kaftar
in that their appearance at the eve was lost on me because they had been gone so long
. There were also too many convenient or cliché revelations for my liking in part 3 and
the whole thing with the hearts just seemed to come out of nowhere with little explanation
.

Overall though this is the first book I’ve read this year where I’ve actually been excited to read the sequel but unfortunately the beauty of part 3 was not enough to make it my first 4⭐️ Read of the year.
