Tidelands by Philippa Gregory
5.0
This was, by far, one of Gregory’s best works of historical fiction. The gripping story of a young woman trapped in poverty by her husband’s disappearance has been riveting. I have not known a book with more unpredictable plot twists. Her daughter Alys is an incredible asset to the story, and their shared toil in similar conditions makes such a tense read.
The struggles of the poor against the backdrop of Charles I’s trial and execution mirror the importance of political events in the lives of those often overlooked by history books- but in ways other than expected.
Overall, this was a delightfully nail-biting read that made me fall in love with the heroine and her resilience against her social and economic station, her abusive husband, and even those that she trusted the most.
