Elizabeth Acevedo is one of the most highly recommended authors to me on bookstagram – and its only for that EXACT reason why I had been apprehensive about actually picking up any of her books; but the blurb of her newest release; had me intrigued right off the bat; and I couldn’t wait to dive into it!
CLAP WWHEN YOU LAND; written in free verse – is the gut wrenching and emotional story of two young girls on the cusp of finally spreading their wings; unaware of each other’s existence until an unthinkable tragedy occurs – their father; a father they are unaware they share, dies when the plane he is flying in, crashes.
Camino and Yahaira are two strong girls – with their own privileges; and their own issues that they battle each and every day – their fears; their anxiety but most of their grief and sense of betrayal they feel when they lose their father; but also when they find out about each other.
Clap When You Land is an incredibly moving story about family, loss, betrayal and the spectrum of emotions that seem to bring them all together. Yes, the actual story doesn’t really start more than halfway through the book – it is the “getting to know” part of the story – understanding the different worlds that Camino and Yahaira seem to inhabit, that seems to be eons away from each other.
It is also a richly diverse with quite intriguing secondary characters + there’s also a villain who will definitely creep you out (trigger warnings: sexual harassment) – all this, and so much more, has definitely made sure that I will be picking up her backlist titles soon!
