Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman, Jay Kristoff

5.0

Firstly, I would really like to thank Bec for trading with me for this, I am so grateful.

Secondly, I have just finished Aurora Rising and I'm a sobbing, heartbroken mess so I'll try to formulate a decent review when all I want to do is go and cry for 918262910273 hours.

This book starts with us meeting 1 of our 7 main characters - Tyler Jones. Tyler is an Alpha and has trained all of his life at Aurora Academy to become a squad leader. Due to unforeseen circumstances it is soon revealed that he will miss The Draft - a ceremony in which the Alpha's get to pick who they would like in their squads, who they think will be most beneficial and who will help them on a path of victory in missions and such.

We see Tyler 'rescue' a mysterious young lady who it turns out, has been suspended in The Fold for 220 years. This young lady is called Aurora. After this rescue, Tyler learns who was left unpicked after the draft, and Tyler is not happy. Initially.
• Tyler Jones - Squad Leader.
• Aurora - AKA Auri.
• Scarlett - Tyler's twin sister.
• Cat - Tyler and Scar's best friend, she is also in love with Tyler - Pilot.
• Zila - Science Officer.
• Kaliis - Syldrathi - - Combat Specialist.
• Finian - Betraskan - Engineer.

Without giving too much away, this book had everything I wanted in a book set in space and more. It had different alien species, it had spaceships, it had lush galaxies and more. We had battle scenes, touching moments (hence my crying like a baby whilst writing this) and we had funny moments.

For me, my favourite character by far was Kal. His character was just everything I wanted, he sounded totally handsome and his whole demeanour was spot on. I found Finian a little annoying sometimes but I think that's how he was meant to come across. I didn't really get connected with Zila, she was so quiet and just tended to get on with what she was ordered by her Alpha. I really also liked Aurora's character and I SHIP HER AND KAL SO HARD!!
The writing was so well done, it was humorous yet told the story perfectly, it was a lot like Illuminae, which I read and loved with my whole being.

This book is the perfect example of the magic that happens when Jay and Amie write together and I couldn't be more invested in them both. Jay is one of my all time favourite authors and I love the other side of his writing that comes out when paired with Amie's writing. It is just so magical to read and I am in awe.

If you haven't pre ordered this book, then please do. It won't disappoint you.
