Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee

2.0

Somewhere in this are seeds of a good concept- someone who leaves home to come back and find the people shifted in ways impossible to comprehend. It’s intellectually interesting to hold up right now when we think about the ways screaming heads and insidious internet communities prey on people’s fears and insecurities to build those into hatred. But the thing is, the novel walked up to that point then backed away from it. The other thing is that while this is apparently the first of the 2 Harper Lee wrote, this novel is meaningless without To Kill a Mockingbird….but it simultaneously messes up the core sense of at least one character we love because of TKaM.

Two stars is about as low as I’ll go for a book, but honestly it is only the seeds of something good that stopped this one from being a 1 star review. At least it was blessedly short.
