Meh. Just watch the movie instead.

Consider me one of those people who found 'The Grudge' to be quite freaky when it was first released. More jumpy than out right terrifying, but I will admit that it made me check underneath the covers before I got into bed for a while.

It was with some trepidation that I picked up this novelisation of the movie, as it doesn't really seem like a plot that could translate from screen to book well. My expectations were pretty low, and they were more or less met. It may not be quite as bad as I expected, but it was definitely 'flat'.

If you don't know the story, it's basically about a woman who dies while in the throes of a terrible rage, and from then on decides to kill ANYONE who is unlucky enough to darken her doorstep. It's a very simplistic story and that is really the problem. We basically follow the ghosts as they stalk and kill multiple victims. It get's to be quite repetitive.

Yes, there are some freaky scenes here and there that are quite effective, the ghost underneath the covers for instance. There's also a little stalker sub-plot that gives creepy descriptions of her breaking into her crushes room and hiding under his bed, then when he comes home later he masturbates without ever knowing she's there. THAT is the creepy stuff (weird how the movie left that bit out!).

Overall, you are better off just watching the movie. *gurgles throat* AAaaa-Aaaa-Aaaa-Aaaaaaa
