Dear Laura by Gemma Amor

5.0

“Everything can change. A life can alter beyond recognition in the time it takes to simply let go of someone’s hand.”

Short but interesting story. The protagonist begins to receive letters on her birthday following her best friend's disappearance after getting into a van. The letters promise clues to find her friend, but in exchange she has to follow a series of rules: giving X (the kidnapper) a pair of her used panties, one of her molars and all sorts of things only a pervert would need from a little girl. Laura's life and personality are shaped by this monster obsessed with her for a long, long time.

If someone needs a good example that the supernatural is not an indispensable ingredient in a horror story, they only need to read this novella. The equivalent of a monster here is a pedophile and is used to reflect on the control that these types of individuals can have in the life of a girl/woman over the years. I've never read 120 pages so fast in my life. I highly recommend it, but it can be somewhat disturbing.
