Tales from Outer Suburbia by Shaun Tan
5.0
I came across this book while looking for a graphic novel to have as a possible book club book for the adult literacy program I work for. I found it on a list of best graphic novels for teens through ALA. This didn't strike me so much as a graphic novel. It felt more like an illustrated novel. I have never read any of Shaun Tan's works before but I sure will make a point to now--this book was brilliant! If you're looking for a quick read that forces you to stretch your imagination a bit then you must give this book a try. It's a book of short stories that deal with... kind of the secret life of suburbia that no one notices unless the look really hard (at least, that's how I took it). My favorite stories were about Eric the foreign exchange student and the one about what happens to poetry. Two thumbs up! I absolutely LOVE this book!

In the end, I wasn't able to use this as a book club selection because the lexile reading level was too high. TOTAL BUMMER. :(
