Persepolis Rising by James S.A. Corey

5.0

Probably a high 4.5.

Struggled with this one at first - it starts off with a couple big down notes and there's this overarching sense of melancholy through the whole book. It's a pretty bold experiment too, jumping ahead ~30 years. Our protagonists haven't changed a whole lot, thought the world around them has changed quite a bit. I'm a big fan of long-form storytelling realizing that its done the work on its characters and knowing that its audience will fill in the rest. In this book, that has two benefits: we get new perspectives, and we get down to the action more often. The main issue here is that it very much feels like prologue to book 8 at times, but there's enough exciting stuff going on that it makes up for it - including another story where Holden's personality actually makes sense as the protagonist! What a wonderful surprise. I've given that character a lot of shit in past reviews but when they use him well, he's a really great character for a certain kind of story. That makes me especially excited for book 8, which I am starting the moment I hit "Post" on this review.
