every part of xie lian's backstory is absolutely crushing but volume 6 is my favorite volume of this story so far because

even though seeing him suffer is so difficult, this volume ends with his worldview that the world isn't entirely bad and kindness is worth giving to others is reaffirmed. I nearly cried when he was given the straw hat.
