It is now September 1941. Wren Jane Beacon gets married to her beloved David Daubeny-Fowkes, a young aristocrat who is also serving in the Navy as a commander of a destroyer on active service in the North Atlantic. Their time together is short before the war intervenes. Jane is put in charge of the first boat crew Wrens' course, in recognition of the great credit she has brought to the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRENs). Unfortunately, Jane meets with a mishap during a training session in which she is wounded and placed in hospital. There she is involved in an incident with a Royal Navy officer which leads to her having to face a court martial.
Rather than shed any further details on the court martial, what I can say is that Jane over the next year faces many challenges both at sea and ashore that attest to her grit and strength of character. Again, D.J. Lindsay has crafted a rich, compelling, and delightful story with Wren Jane Beacon occupying center stage.
