I love Rosamunde Pilcher. I was first introduced to her years ago but I can’t remember how or why or which book of hers I fell in love with.

Anyway, this book has been on my TBR since 2015, and I finally borrowed it from my library after a legit 25-week wait time for the hold. This is a shockingly popular book for not being a new novel.

Overall, the plot is not very deep or very original. However, it’s Pilcher’s writing style, characters, and strong sense of setting/place that really makes this book shine. I’d probably categorize it as “women’s fiction” except I HATE that categorization. It’s much more “relationship fiction” in that it deals with various relationships within four families in a small town in Scotland, and how the past and present collide when Verena Steynton decides to throw a ball for her daughter Katy, and various members of the family have to prepare for it (including coming home from overseas).

Content warning: Suicide.

The ending was a little abrupt and honestly quite unexpected but somehow it worked fairly well with the overall story. Definitely want to read more by Pilcher though, I’ve whetted my appetite now and have missed her beautiful writing style!
