Alessandra was literally the epitome of a STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER! Doing whatever she could to get what she wanted, coming up with multiple plans and schemes to execute her plans, and manipulating people, and also having exquisite fashion taste, Alessandra could do no wrong… or more like she was a total baddie in the best way possible.

I loved the idea that Alessandra was always ahead of others in her plans, and she was very intelligent and conniving. In a way, Alessandra seemed like someone with moral gray values as the only thing that mattered was her getting what she wanted, becoming Queen and having absolute power. Alessandra had everything planned out in order to catch the Shadow King, Kallias’s attention, and it worked. Although once Alessandra arrived in the palace, not only did she have to work in order to ensure her courting with Kallias, but also fend off other suitors/ past lover, her father trying to marry her off, the council not convinced of Alessandra and Kallias, and more. Alessandra had a lot to take care of, but thankfully nothing was too much for her to handle.

I think this was the first time I read a character like Alessandra. Usually most female characters I’ve read are somewhat capable of doing things on their own, but never to the level that Alessandra was at. Alessandra was unapologetic in who she was from speaking her mind, being confident, taking pleasure for herself (despite the law forbidding a women to lose her “virtue” before marriage), and just doing what she wanted. In simpler terms, Alessandra was a boss, she managed to use the gifts her lovers gave her as a means of currency, and was able to have finances for herself. Alessandra was the kind of women who didn’t rely on others, if anything the only people she trusted was herself.

Now if you love, ballroom dancing, getting dressed up in ball gowns, royalty, mystery, romance, a dark haired, beautiful, mysterious man lead who wields some magical power, this is the book for you! As I read about all the balls and parties Alessandra attended, I was transported inside the story. Kallias was every bit of the mysterious, dark haired male lead we all know and love. In the beginning, Kallias kept to himself, but as a means of precaution and protection as others sought to kill him, and use his power. With Alessandra, Kallias was able to find someone to confide in, have a friendship, truly experience the yearning of wanting more after years of being alone. I especially loved how Kallias was so protective about Alessandra and while he was always the gentleman with her, towards the end he couldn’t deny himself from her anymore! Whoop whoop!

The twists and turns surrounding the mystery of who killed Kallias’s parents, and who wanted to kill him was intriguing. I didn’t expect the reveal towards the end with who was actually the true villain, but I had my suspicions. I loved Alessandra and Kallias’s relationship in how they were both equals, challenged one another, and together they were able to find happiness that they hadn’t experienced fully in the lives. Everything about this story went far beyond my expectations and I wish there was more to read. Glad to know that through everything Alessandra and Kallias were able to get their happy ending together.
