Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt
4.0
4.5/5 stars rounded down. Audio book. The narrator was great; her Scottish accent for Ethan was spot-on. One of my favorites so far this year. The writing is so seamless; the story telling was immaculate. It felt as though there was nothing wasted in Remarkably Bright Creatures. Van Pelt portrays such great characters, especially Marcellus, the giant Pacific octopus that has forged a relationship with Tova, the aquarium housekeeper. Cameron also travels to Sowell Bay to find out more about his family and seeing him grow up and come to terms with his life.
The 0.5 star that was deducted is that the story was wonderfully written, but predictable. I do not spoil books, but there was a point when everything became clear about halfway through. By that point, I was so invested in the characters that I finished it. I also wanted more from Marcellus; every moment with him in it was hilarious and heartwarming. He is so prissy and snarky and so incredibly loving to Tova. Overall, this is a brilliant book, and I would recommend to anyone. Remarkably Bright Creatures is sure to be a classic!
