The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak
5.0
"To immigrants and exiles everywhere, the uprooted, the re-rooted and rootless, and to the trees we left behind, rooted in our memory........"
The island of missing trees is a beautifully told story of forbidden love. Based on true historical events and told in dual timelines, I found myself totally mesmerised as I read about two lovers from different cultures seperated during the Cypriot War in 1974.
A large part of the storyline is narrated by a fig tree. Yes, you heard correctly, the perspective and thoughts of a tree, as it watches humans failing, yet again, to live alongside each other in harmony. Humans destroying each other, and all that is wonderfully beautiful around them.
Surprisingly, I didn't find it at all strange that a fig tree was talking to me. It was well written and so easy to get lost in the evocative storytelling. However, I honestly will never quite look at a fig tree, or another tree for that matter, in the same way again 😁.
I will definitely be reading more from Elif Shafak in the future.
