Climbing the Ladder by B.A. Tortuga
DNF @ 30%
I love MMF and usually connect with Tortuga’s writing, but this was rough. While I liked the overall plot – The choppy and short sentences made it difficult to read (probably 90% of the sentences were less than 5 words long).
It’s also a lot of internal dialogue and pages of Mesa and Kody “let us explain” and them not telling Sammy anything. They kidnap her and there’s also a sort of supernatural claiming (no bite) where she’s interacting with them sexually due to a drive but while still being hurt, angry, and confused. Because no one is telling her what’s happening.
This is earlier writing and Tortuga’s craft has definitely matured in the last dozen years so it won’t keep me from reading more of her work.
