The Forest of Enchantments by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
5.0
Chitra Divakaruni is an amazing story teller, who turns words into a gateway to the other world. When I completed ‘The Palace of Illusions’, my first thought - like many others - was when is Chitra going to write Sita’s story? ‘The Forest of Enchantments’ delivers and how! Going beyond the one-sided narrative, Ramayan - this book gives voice to a story untold, from Sita’s perspective.
This is not just a retelling for Sita, but brings forth lesser discussed and more often tainted characters of Kaikeyi, Surpanakha and Mandodari, humanising their almost-villainous personas. Sita’s experiences of different forms of love are a revelation, heart warming and heart-breaking all at once. Chitra’s Sita is a champion of present-day women, giving lessons on how they should be treated by their loved ones, their rights in a relationship, and when it’s time for them to stand up for themselves and say, ‘Enough’. Sita’s closing speech is so poignant, I had goosebumps!
Must read for women, this will change the way you look at Sita.
