Beneath the Dark Ice by Greig Beck

5.0

This was actually my second read (listen) of this book since the first one I seen not to have record of on my audible account or Goodreads…and since I’m *slightly* obsessed with making sure everything I’ve read lately is on Goodreads and has a review I obviously had to read it again. Feel free to eye roll here. I’m eye rolling at myself. Anyway. I could pretend I re-read/listened to this book out of a sense of duty to my review system, but in reality I couldn’t wait to dig back in. I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Alex Hunter and his companions as they navigate the caves beneath the Antarctic ice and it was just as enjoyable the second time than the first - and that’s saying something.

The book starts with a preface read by Greig Beck himself with a short background about himself as well as his reasoning for and research behind the book. I highly recommend that readers do not overlook this as it adds another dimension and frame of mind to the book. There are elements that are taken to the max extremes, in particular in the case of Alex Hunter’s special abilities, however the concept that another ecosystem and evolutionary world exists below our own in the depths of the earth is feasible and backed up and leaves room for extremes to be taken by the author in a way that is thrilling and yet not completely into the realms of impossibility.

The action begins early in the book, with an initial oil finding mission to the Antarctic going wrong and contact being lost. A special forces team are sent in to investigate and hopefully retrieve the missing team, alongside another team of scientists to continue the research project as a very much “secondary” mission to the rescue operation. Uh huh. It won’t surprise you to know quite how badly it all goes down, but the speed at which the book moves, the unpredictable nature of the events, and the way it grabs you as the reader right until the end might just be the surprising part.

A fantastic read the first and second time of listening and massive kudos to Sean Mangan - the narrator. Signing off the review now to go start “Dark Rising” - the second in the seri
