I really enjoyed this one--didn't even realize a magpie was going to have an important role when I started it, so that was a nice surprise!

It's the story of an eccentric recluse named Maude who lives on her family's estate in Suffolk. The estate borders a fen, with which Maude has always felt a connection, one of the few in her lonely life. Besides the servants, much of her life is dominated by her arrogant, misogynist father. Maude's private war with him leads to tragic and possibly supernatural events that tie together a saint, a mystic and a Doom (that is, an artwork depicted Judgement Day in its most gruesome form). It also dredges up old secrets and guilt. Maude's a very engaging heroine and you can't help but get caught up in her daily struggles.
