This book made me realise that there are two types of fiction - person lead and scenario led. Person led is where characters are pushing the story forward by trying to change or resolve something. Scenario led is where characters are placed within an interesting scenario and they are left to see how they will get on in a ‘day in the life’ style story.
This fell into the latter and, like The Book Thief, I didn’t gel with it. Sure it was excellently written but in terms of enjoyment it never grabbed me because there was no journey for the character. They never truly tried to escape their situation just kept going on towards the inevitability.
So all the stars for a thought provoking concept but minus a few for the lack of rebellion.
But thank you book for making me realise what I really want from a story.
