Daja's Book by Tamora Pierce

4.0

This is my favorite book in the series so far! I like the conflict, the new setting, the antagonistic Yarrun... It was hilarious to see a character named Polyam (which my brain constantly corrected to polyamory), but her character was fascinating and very serious. Daja's struggles to be recognized by other Traders were poignant, and I loved the infuriating moments when they refused to listen to her even in times of crisis.

One of my reservations with the first two books was the style of narration, which constantly jumps from one character to another. It made me question why each installment was called "[Character]'s Book," when they share relatively equal footing, aside from some larger thematic resonance. But it occurred to me while the characters were trying to untangle their magic in this installment that the narration style reflects that plot point. Just like Tris, Briar, Sandry, and Daja's magic is woven together into a single tapestry, so too are the chapters structured in such a way that no single character stays in focus the entire time.

I am looking forward to the fourth and final installment in this series, although I can't imagine how it will wrap everything up. The main overarching conflict seems to be relationship-based and centered around the kids' magic being tied together. Still, I enjoy the act of reading these books a lot, so I assume that the ending will be fun to read, if nothing else.
