I've never been a hero. I've never wanted to be. I make a better villain.
This book is peak enemies to lovers, and I LOVED every minute of it. Taliyah is witty, ruthless, and downright hilarious, going toe to toe with Alaroc at every turn. The plot was great as well as the writing, and the spice was amazing. I hear this series is a spin-off of the Lords of the Underworld series, so I'm definitely going to be starting that once I finish the next book in this series, The Immortal.
She strapped on every piece of her armor. The breastplate, the limb guards. The weapons belt. Because everyone should look their sexiest on their proposed death day.
The world-building and mythology in this book was extremely interesting, and not difficult to understand, although I think I would have enjoyed it even more (if that's even possible) if I had read the other series first. With that being said, I don't think it's necessary to read Lords of the Underworld prior to reading this to understand what's going on.
"I have created and destroyed worlds, conquered kingdoms and claimed other men's armies as my own. But I've never faced an opponent quite like you."
I loved the dual POVs, and the progression of Taliyah and Roc's relationship. It definitely gives a new meaning to the phrase 'all is fair in love and war'. I was a bit sad for the book to end because I wanted more of their story, but hopefully they'll make an appearance in the next book in the series.
