This House is Haunted by John Boyne

4.0

A fun, old-fashioned ghost story with a likable heroine. Eliza Caine finds herself in a Turn of the Screw type situation, taking care of two kids who seem to be alone in an old house. It turns out they're not completely alone, neither in body or in spirit--and the spirit, in particular, doesn't want anybody else looking after her children.

Eliza, like I said, is a likable heroine. She's progressive by Victorian standards, but in a believable way, since she's pretty much lived on her own with just her father for company, a man who was obviously fine with her thinking for herself. Her relationship with the man who might have been a love interest if circumstances were different, is also believable and pretty fun.
