I requested access to Felix Ever After; not only because I do need more diverse books on my shelf; and I was even more excited to read this beauty when I found out that this beauty was written by an author who was on the spectrum itself? JACKPOT!
Felix Love is a young transgender; who has recently undergone the knife to become who he really is and yet still seems struggling with his own identity. The fact that his father still seems to be struggling with reconciling with his real name; sometimes still accidentally referring to him with his dead name.
Add on the pressure of being his best; showing his creativity, competing with other artists for a chance at a scholarship at a prestigious Art School; the only reason why he and his dad struggle for his tuition at a private school; a stepping stone to the art school he knows is the best choice for his future and the fact that he somehow isn’t as proficient in dating/relationships as his name would suggest he be– his life isn’t easy as it is.
But when he starts becoming a target for homophobic/transphobic bullying at his school; and he decides to take a stand for it; which means that he “knows” that it is the one boy who was one of closest friends before; but now loves heckling and harassing him in school and is also his main competition for the scholarship.
When readers want queer representation in books; Felix Ever After is EXACTLY the kind of book they are referring to – and it is a light read despite the heavy sub – plots within the book – but it was the journey of the protagonist that was the highlight of the book. Because no matter what gender/sexuality you identify with, Felix’s fears and anxiety about his own self is something that would find acceptance in everyone of us.
