"It was a kiss of scorpions, both heavy with poison."

I adored this book. It was gritty and dark with moments of humor. An ending that literally made me gasp. Morally grey characters befitting any noire. The whole thing clips along very well, and by the second half, I didn't want to stop.

The prose flowed brilliantly, with only a few moments I found repetitive, but I think repeating information a few times is not a bad idea anyway. But there were plenty of lines that's made me giggle or gasp. I was enthralled.

It wasn't what I expected when I first picked it up, but I think it's better than what I hoped for.

I mostly listened to the audiobook, though I own a physical copy and read a little too. I may go back and actually read the whole thing, especially so I can see all the Spanish that was used.

I also love that this story brings to light history we don't talk about, and I'm sure many don't even know about.

Overall, I definitely recommend this book, and I'd love to see it adapted into a movie (a rarity for me tbh.)

If you read this, I recommend checking out the Spotify Playlist Silvia Moreno-Garcia created for it too.
