One Step Behind by Henning Mankell
4.0
After all the crime novels and series that depict detective work almost like magic - often in power, almost faster than the criminals, seeing the right threads with some prophetic vision - this seemed to be more realistic and maybe even honest depiction of what could a squad's life be like while solving a serial killer's case. There is a very human dimension to most of the characters as they go along solving the case without sleeping, doubting their choice in profession and also the whole Swedish society, and still feeling horrified by all the events. Herning has this ability to balance the main character's rumination with the outside world, so it has a very real feel to it. Also cool - everything is happening in Sweden.
