Ancillary Sword by Ann Leckie
she (thankfully) got me at last. surprised me a lot but in a good way, i finally care about the characters and am very curious to see where it's going in book 3. writing still far from what i enjoy but it makes sense and there's heart in this one!
Ancillary Mercy by Ann Leckie
sigh. loved the ending, i vibe w ann leckie's vision and politics and interests unfortunately i found the entire trilogy so badly written/constructed that it's hard to truly appreciate it. happy i read all of it, but probs wouldn't rec them!
Frontier by Grace Curtis
immediately catapulted to one of my favorite books of all times. simply stunning, does so much with so little. rarely read something this vivid. what a ride... now THAT'S a western. cannot rec it enough, it's thrilling, moving, very clever, AND ALSO GAY
The Hundred Years' War on Palestine by Rashid Khalidi
incredible! v well-written, easy to follow, poignant and just so well constructed it makes the learning of a lot of information very accessible. highly recommend for a better understanding of how we got here, what a writer!
Bunny by Mona Awad
so on one hand i expected to hate this or be really bored/unimpressed by it and i wasn't, on the other hand i started enjoying it so much that when it didn't deliver ultimately i got v disappointed. therefore impossible to tell if this is a good or bad book
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
couldve been 5 stars if its pace was tighter/it had more rhythm. meandered too much in the beginning to get me immersed, so the ending didn't hit as hard BUT i loooooved the concepts/take on haunted house/romance + she always writes well!
Yellowface by R.F. Kuang
interesting exercise, unsuccessful imo. tries to do satire + thriller, fails at both. it kept losing me and getting me again, i think kuang is her own worst enemy. could've been much smarter, also too meta for its own good lol but AMAZING audiobook!
Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus
expected to pass time w it n little else, was actually quite blown away! PHENOMENAL audiobook narration, v moving n clever storytelling, honestly a very good surprise. moved me deeply but also made me laugh a lot.. a solid Book ClubTM book
The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden
v unique tale. loved the floatiness/strange story construction, great prose, moving characters and sick family as central theme. ICKED by the hints of romance, the biggest n only flaw to me. bonus pic for the demented priest
The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden
sooooo many thoughts. fantastic writer, she's truly gifted with words however the romance takes so much from the story i almost hated this. ultimately great characters narrowly pull this off, arden is very skilled!
