truly a wild premise for a book and i respect it
the cover and blurb definitely did not do it justice, i was gonna skip based on that but i liked the title and it sounded familiar - someone i follow on sg rated it well. turns out the writing was much higher quality than the cover and blurb for this edition lead me to believe

i actually really enjoyed this and basically couldn't put it down?? i think feinberg does a really good job of capturing the feel of a specific landscape, a specific community in a specific era. and the 'moral' of the story is still really really relevant today. the struggles may have different names but the same underlying shape but also its good to see how far we've come

i enjoyed this way more than i expected but i also had no idea what it was about going in
even though it's a bit of a depressing book it's not grimdark, which is all i need - the characters are all pretty decent people just trying to do their best. it feels like a really honest depiction of what life was like in that era, and made me so mad. steinbeck really said FUCK COPS FUCK CAPITALISM we are stuck in an unending cycle of exploitation and it is inhumane to be rich in this economy. he said this almost a hundred years ago. wow.
the book wasn't hugely plotty and did kind of just... end, but that's okay because that feels true to the honesty of what steinbeck was trying to depict.
