this was supposed to be a june read but i picked it up again two days ago and could not put it down again. beautiful and so so heartbreaking. i was not here to witness the civil war in all its brutality. reading brotherless night gave a glimpse into it.

a gripping narration of what it means to be a woman, a sister and a palestinian, caught between exile and home. we see sonia grapple between the choices she’s made for herself and question her role as a performer and artist. i found myself reaching for enter ghost more than once. a definite fav.

Unhinged and witty. The faceless main character has you chasing after her, wanting you to shake her shoulders and snap your fingers in front of her face. There is want pouring outside of her — the desire to be wanted, to lead a life that’s not hers and to be brilliant. Something you can empathize with no matter the great lengths she runs into. Sprinkle in some commentary about our endless needs for ideals, status and the idealization of the self and Patel’s debut novel will have you either a fan or far from it.

The book had a cute premise to begin with but nothing — and I mean this with love — nothing could distract me from the writing and just how much it made me remember my days of Wattpad in the summer of ‘12.

And not in the good way.
