While I agree with most of the conclusions the author wrote about, the book itself felt too long (despite being rather short), and very preachy.

This was almost as good as Nettle & Bone (still my favorite from the author), I love T. Kingfisher's dark fairytales. The only reason why I didn't love it as much was the fact that half of the story is told from the perspective of 14-year-old girl, I much prefer Kingfisher's older characters. Herster and her gang (and Tom!) were absolutely delightful, I loved them so much. I know I'm going to reread the book one day just for them.

I am not a fan of a bi panic trope but I guess it made it more believable for these specific characters. I liked how realistic the story seemed (at least realistic for me who knows absolutely nothing about surviving on tropical islands), and the way the author handled characters' backstories and the aftermath of their rescue. I could do without the third act conflict but at least it got resolved quickly. Also, for a story that gets tagged as age gap, there was next to nothing to explore this side of things. Still, I had fun and stayed up late to finish the book, I wanted to see how they'd resolve their relationship, and I was not disappointed.
