Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian, came to India on an expedition to climb the Nanga Parbat during World War 2 where he was captured by the British in an internment camp. He manages to escape it with a friend, Peter and they both set off for Tibet where they hope to find refuge. It takes them two long years to walk over all the mountains where they met a vast variety of people from very hospitable to robbers and had to beg, plead and trick the local officials to reach the forbidden city of Lhasa. Surprisingly, they are both welcomed with open arms in Tbet and in the course f five years they hold important ranks in the government where Heinrich becomes close friends with the 14th Dalai Lama.

A true tale depicting the little known country of Tibet before China occupied it. Tibet is known as the birthplace of the Dalai Lama, where the people live and die with spiritualism amongst the picturesque scenery of the mountains encompassing it. Everything is explained in vivid details which manages to stir the wanderlust amongst people and a thirst to know more about this beautiful lace.

I watched the movie that this was based on 12 years ago and I knew it was based on a true story, but hadn't read the book. The book was so incredible, and since it was written right before the Chinese overtook Tibet, from a contemporary of that time, it was incredibly insightful. I only wish I could go back in time to what he had seen, since most of the architecture is gone, many Tibetans have left, and the attitude of the people has changed so drastically. Hearing about the Dalai Lama as a child was an added bonus.

Great read! A mix of adventure, survival, and travel genres. Loved reading it after being in Nepal and seeing some of Tibetan culture!
