This was a beautifully written book, but something didn't click for me. Perhaps I just wasn't in the headspace to properly enjoy it. I found myself stopping because it was just so depressing, or otherwise seemed longwinded at times. Still, Tembi beautifully articulated her grief upon losing her husband, as well as the tough road she faced in helping him live through his cancer battle. This wasn't the right time for me to read this book, but I think others would really connect with it.

I realize this was a memoir but I kept waiting for something more to happen. The book focuses on the grief and healing process and I don’t think this was the right time for me to read a story like this.

“From Scratch” is a beautiful memoir.
American actress, Tembi Locke shares her cross cultural, interracial love, and heartbreak openly and with rich detail.
The book is set against the backdrop of Sicilian culture and centers on food and how cooking can be healing, especially pasta.

A beautiful listen. I truly enjoyed listening to the author reflect on her experiences through loss, love and family. Sometimes her words were profound, sometimes touching. Sometimes I could relate, sometimes I couldn’t, but I could respect her for having the bravery to tell her story.
