This is so well written. I felt like I lived in Sicily. The way she describes her feelings from falling in love, to working through the dynamics of different families and cultures, to dealing with grief was so deep you can feel it with her. I loved the sprinkles of Italian/Sicilian dialect and their translations right after. I loved the explanations behind certain actions and how she described her thought process through any given situation. It was overall a great read. I deducted a star because there were parts of it that felt too lengthy and could have been shortened with no impact to the storytelling.

This book was beautifully written. I’m usually not a memoir/non-fiction reader, but I loved the love behind the story.

What a beautiful story of love and surviving loss, of family, of food, of the power of place. This book is so tender sweet, so evocative and so moving. Exquisite.

I’ve read and re read this book after a personal loss.

I appreciate this book for many things, most was how much it helped me to learn to continue on after loss and hold my loved one in my heart when it hurts so much without them. I also learned a lot about international marriage, Italy, Black History in Texas, dying of a terminal illness, adoption, merging of families across cultural barriers.

I’m so grateful for a place to hold space for grief and loss. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

A nice exploration of grief, loss of a spouse, and finding hope, family, and a future after devastating loss. Also, the descriptions of fresh food in Sicily make me want to grow my own food so badly!
