Fascinating Story

The story in the Bible of Rahab has always interested me. This book brings her story to a new level. It really puts you in her place and makes you think about her life and her choices.

I admit that despite being a Christian myself I have always turned my nose away from Christian media. I remember hating the days of being forced to watch awful shows like Veggie Tales in Sunday school and always felt that the rest of the media geared towards Christians must be unbearable. I always found the music particularly hard to suffer through.

I became an ardent atheist in my teens and twenties and only returned to the faith when I lost my mother in my late twenties. I am trying to be a better person and better Christian though and have started reading my bible, albeit very slowly but surely. The story that so far has captured my interest more than any other of the Bible has been that of Rahab. I thought maybe reading a historical fiction book about the woman who I admired most from the Bible might help me find some interest in Christian books at least.

This book was amazing. I did not expect to have such a good time reading this book nor did I think I would feel so profoundly inspired. I found Rahabs story to be riveting and awe inspiring. Her faith in God is greater than anyone’s I’ve ever known in real life. It’s made me reconsider my own relationship with God and how I should be versus how I’ve been. Just the way she and Salmone think of God and the lessons he is imparting on them makes me want to reconsider my own struggles and what God may have tried to teach me.

This book has shown me that not only can Christian fiction be really good but that a book can also have the power to inspire you and make you really re-examine your own life and faith, or maybe in my case has been a lack thereof.

I've read the 10th anniversary edition of Pearl in the Sand, so I don't know if there's a big difference to the original edition, but it was such an enthralling read!

My interpretation of the book:
SpoilerRahab, a woman with a unforgettably tough and broken life. Sold to serve Jericho's gods by giving up her body so her family can survive at the age of 15, Rahab's hope of everything is lost.
Not even living behind the most powerful and protected walls give Rahab peace. But when news of the Hebrews and their God is told to Rahab, she finds hope and starts to put her trust in Him instead of fear.

When spies from the Hebrews come into Jericho, Rahab finds it as an opportunity to find out more about their God. So, she brings the spies into her home and save them from grave danger. After saving their lives, she makes them promise to save her life in return.

When the great and mighty Jericho falls, Rahab and her family are to put down their Jericho past and start a new life in Israel as members of the Tribe of Judah. They all agree, but for Rahab, her wrecked past is so hard to forget.

Salmone, a man of pride and success now hold another responsibility. To look after the Canaanite family. To care for Rahab. Knowing her of past, Salmone keeps his distance and doesn't accept her. But as he spends more time with her, he starts to see the determination and the faith that saved her from the falling Jericho. He starts to drawing close to her.

Rahab starts to have feelings toward Salmone. But knowing that he hates her for the past she holds, she keeps her distance. But when she starts to feel that Salmone is drawing close to her, she starts to feel the love and honour she never thought she'll ever feel.

After their marriage, Rahab still cannot let go of her past. She still holds the wrecked. The pain. The unacceptance. When Salmone claims that he doesn't care about her past as she is a precious jewel that God cannot throw away, no matter the past, Rahab finally feels the love and grace of the true living God.

Pearl in the Sand was another success to Tessa Afshar as she had me reading continuously, captivating me into the book. I loved how she told the untold story of Rahab and her life after her survival within the falling Jericho.

I cannot wait to read more of her masterpiece.
