I love the original text. I think that illustrating the story imposed too much visual sympathy on Meursault, blunting the almost nihilistic apathy that Camus so deftly established within the character. If you want a simplification of the story this will work, but the underlying psychology of the novel is missing.

I haven't read the original and the graphic novel is difficult to follow without that background. The plot in the first part wasn't very clear as it was unfolding. And the main character wasn't very sympathetic in this version...maybe he's not in the original either?
There is a sense of...something here. Interesting ideas that are begging to be fleshed out and mulled over.
Overall, the brevity of the graphic novel format doesn't seem like a good fit for this story.

I do plan on reading this book someday to see the writing Albert Camus did. I have not read the original. Wow, this is not my cup of tea. I had a hard time with this story. Meursault never draws me in. He is so distant, it leaves the reader in the cold. He is also an enigma. Is he heartless, or does he care on some level? It seems to me he really has no feelings. I guess back in the 30s or when this was written, an atheist was a shocking character, but now days it’s just another person’s beliefs. It’s not shocking at all. I have met several atheist and the few I know are actually really good people. They believe you are good because you’re human and that’s how humans act. This heartless beast in this story is not a type of atheist I have been around before.
The art does it’s job. It is bright and hot and seems to be the only thing you can feel as a reader. I need to read the book and see how the fuss is about. This graphic novel did not make me a fan of this work. It is like anti heart. Blah.

It was a good book. A bit confusing as it's a graphic novel adaptation but the artwork was marvelous. I would like to read the original work sometime because of this. The plot was good. A bit scary towards the end lol

First read it in Highschool, for my French class (since I live in France), and it was an amazing surprise!
I used to severly dislike the books we were given to read, as they usually didn't fit my really fantasy oriented taste at the time.
But The Stranger was a game changer and started my now very diversified reading adventures.
The beginning is so out of context, and the main character will not help you understand it any more. I still remember my stomach twisting at the events happening inside, and emphasizing so much with him, our stranger, living but never belonging.

I’m not entirely sure how I should rate this book. What does stand out to me is that it has been a looooooong time since I’ve read a book in one day. I could have easily read this in one sitting if I didn’t have interrupting plans. The writing and the voice of the narrator makes it a very fast-paced read and it was actually enjoyable. I even found him to be funny.
Going into it, I had a certain idea of how it was to be. A high school English teacher recommended it to me and wow! It only took me around 8 or so years to read it! Although to my memory, she said it was about a man who is traveling the desert and accidentally kills someone. Naturally, when the book opens to a man in France, I realize that this is not what I thought. To be fair, beaches and deserts both have lots of sand??
I will also say that one of my many irrational fears is that some freak accident will occur where I accidentally murder someone and I have to deal with the consequences of my life changing forever over one quick action. Thanks for the stress, book.
